Our Ako Art Bus Tour Adventure
Jaack and I (Bonnie) had the opportunity to go on the Ako Art Bus Tour on Wednesday 20 June. We departed from Papakura Art Gallery at 9am, en route to Fresh Gallery Otara, with Leilani Kake as our conductor. Along the way we heard from Leilani about a couple of tips and tricks for being waste free! Before we arrived at the gallery, we heard from the amazing Pascal Bridger-Wharepapa about his graffiti and painting artistry, and how he does life in the creative world. We then arrived at Fresh Gallery Otara, had a look around, and appreciated the beautiful exhibitions. Then it was back into the bus and on towards Mangere Arts Centre. We got shown around the gallery and had a korero with some of the speakers from the bus! After Mangere, the bus headed out to Pukekohe. On the way we heard from Maha Tomo speaking about his carving business and his experiences in the creative industry. Then Raymond Sagapolutele talked to us about his work as a photographer, and the years leading up to where he’s at now. Arriving at Pukekohe, we had a look around at the photography exhibitions. Then it was time for lunch - pizzas provided! After lunch, we all got back into the bus and headed back to Papakura. On the way we got some encouragement from the lovely Jasmine Te Hira, and learned a bit about her and her creative journey. At one point we were given pieces of clay to make something with - Leilani provided some kowhai branches to make impressions of in our clay.
All in all it was a really educational experience. It was great to see the creative spaces in neighbouring places. Jaack and I fully enjoyed ourselves!
We’d like to thank Leilani for organising such an awesome trip. Loved it!
Have a flick through of some shots I snapped throughout the day!
